TasNetworks and the Energy Charter

Launched in January 2019, the Energy Charter is a respected coalition of like-minded Australian energy organisations with a shared purpose and passion for customers and communities. TasNetworks became a full signatory in 2021, and as of August 2024, is one of 17 other signatories.

The Energy Charter was developed collaboratively by Australian energy businesses and consumer and customer representatives who recognised that better customer outcomes require a whole of sector response - where critical perspectives and insights can be shared.

The purpose of the Energy Charter is to "Empower one another across the energy supply chain to deliver better energy outcomes for customers and communities." Read more about the Energy Charter here on their official website.

Energy Charter Principles

The Energy Charter has five interlinked principles built around Principle 1, which relates to the culture of energy businesses and the need to focus on better customer and community outcomes. This principle underpins the mindset and behaviours required for delivery against the remaining four principles.

Energy Charter accountability process

One of the defining features of the Energy Charter is its rigorous and transparent accountability process. Full Signatory CEOs must publicly share the following key annual reports:

  • Annual Disclosure Report - details how each signatory business is delivering against the Energy Charter Principles, the business' current maturity level based on assessments by internal and external stakeholders against the Energy Charter's Maturity Model, and a roadmap of the activities required to move the business towards its desired maturity level.

  • Annual Feedback summary - details engagement undertaken by each signatory to determine its engagement maturity, with special attention given to what the business heard and its response.
