TasNetworks is seeking your feedback to help shape a proposed community benefits sharing program (CBSP) for the North West Transmission Developments (NWTD). You can find out more about the NWTD here.
TasNetworks formed a Youth Panel in early 2022 made up of 18–25-year-olds from the six local government areas impacted by the NWTD.
The panel, meeting between March to May 2022, were tasked with co-designing a draft CBSP framework.
By their final meeting, the Youth Panel had developed and agreed on a draft CBSP framework. This framework provides several recommendations to be considered by TasNetworks for the development of a NWTD CBSP.
The draft recommendations address three main areas of the CBSP:
What projects and/or activities should be awarded funding under the program
Who should be awarded funding under the program
How the community benefits program should be delivered.
You can view the Youth Panel’s recommendations here.

TasNetworks is seeking community input into the development of a Community Benefits Sharing Program (CBSP) Framework for the North West Transmission Developments (NWTD).
The proposed North West Transmission Developments (NWTD) include 240km of new and upgraded transmission lines and other energy infrastructure, that will increase the capacity of Tasmania’s electricity network. The developments will link the transmission network from the Cressy area to Sheffield, Burnie, Hampshire and Staverton, providing enough capacity for Marinus Link and other renewable energy developments to connect into the electricity grid. The developments will support Australia’s energy transition alongside Tasmania’s ambition to be a world leading renewable energy provider.
The NWTD are currently in the planning and approval stage. For more information about the NWTD click here.
Community benefits sharing programs are commonly used on major infrastructure projects, such as electricity transmission developments. They are a mechanism for helping to ensure the project delivers sustainable and equitable benefits to impacted communities. Unlike compensation for landowners or actions that mitigate environmental impacts, community benefits sharing programs are focused on leaving a positive legacy in the community by addressing existing social issues or building on natural strengths in the region.
The purpose of the CBSP Framework is to detail the eligibility requirements for any initiatives funded under the CBSP and identify the community or communities funded initiatives should benefit. The CBSP will only be implemented if the NWTD are approved.
Feedback is now being sought on the draft CBSP Framework. The draft framework was co-designed with a Youth Panel which comprised 18 to 25 year olds from North West Tasmania. For more information about the Youth Panel process, and to hear from Youth Panel participants, click here.
